In the First Half of 2022, 126,783 Domestic Industrial Property Applications Were Submitted
The Ministry of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey
announced that in the first half of 2022, a total of 126,783 domestic
industrial property applications were made to the Turkish Patent and
Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT), including 3,657 patents, 3,229 utility
models, 87,932 trademarks, and 31,965 designs. According to Minister of
Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank's announcement regarding the
first-half data, domestic patent applications increased by 3% compared
to the same period last year. There was a 34% increase in domestic
utility model applications and a 28% increase in domestic design
applications.
Highlighting the significant increases in domestic
industrial property registration numbers, VARANK stated, "In the
January-June period, the number of domestic patent registrations
increased by 11% to reach 1,719, while the number of domestic utility
model registrations rose by 38% to 1,273. During this period, there was a
50% increase in domestic trademark registrations, resulting in 70,603
trademark registrations. The number of domestic design registrations
also increased by 38%, reaching 31,589."
VARANK noted that the
institutions with the highest number of patent applications between
January and June were Mercedes-Benz Türk with 112 applications, ASELSAN
with 71, and Arçelik with 61.
He also emphasized that there was a
significant increase in geographical indication applications, stating,
"Geographical indication applications saw a 120% increase in the first
six months of 2022 compared to the same period last year, with 163
geographical indication registrations made during this time."
Looking
at TÜRKPATENT's statistics for the first six months of 2022, 14
universities ranked among the top 50 organizations filing patent
applications, with universities making 333 patent and utility model
applications. Yıldız Technical University and Istanbul Gelişim
University shared the top spot with 17 applications each, followed by
Erciyes University with 13, and İstanbul Technical University, Üsküdar
University, and Ege University with 12 each.
According to the
distribution of industrial property applications by province, the
ranking for patent applications was as follows: Istanbul, Ankara, and
Bursa. For trademark and utility model applications, the ranking was
Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir; and for design applications, it was
Istanbul, Bursa, and Ankara. The provinces with the highest geographical
indication applications were Balıkesir, Hakkari, and Malatya (16),
followed by Bursa (15) and Konya and Sakarya (7).
With the
registration of Giresun's round hazelnut, the number of registered
geographical indications for Turkey increased to 8 in the European
Union. Previously, Antep baklava, Aydın figs, Aydın chestnuts, Bayramiç
white, Malatya apricots, Milas olive oil, and Taşköprü garlic had
received geographical indication status.
The ranking of institutions with the highest number of patent applications, as stated by VARANK, is as follows:
